Recently had been to a friends house, and after initial talking and settling down,  i went to do 'TV channels surfing".  Maybe they were thinking, this guy can't be without TV.  I generally do this when I go to anybody house . Just to keep myself update on what kind of programmes are coming. And within 10 minutes I reaffirm myself of the same conclusion, "its' the same JUNK".

This I do, because there is no cable connection at home, for the past four years !!!!

When people get to know this, they look at us as if we had come from some other planet. "NO TV. Really!!!.  Then what do you at home. Actually its a good idea."  These are the typical comments.

We have two free entertainment channels called Shraddha & Dhiya( my daughters) though , through them we get all comedy, fighting,  drama,..

But really without TV , its so much peaceful and gives lots and lots of free time.  If you had seen my "My hobbies Blog"  all these activities can be done, because of this.  Also it started as an experiment inspired by another teacher Manjunath ji,  but loved to continue the experiment.

Actually its part of the experiment to purify our environment. Similarly tried many news papers, and settled finally on to "THE HINDU" now.  Other news papers espeically times of india,  out of 10 days, 8-9 days there will be a negative news on the front page, and photos which i am not comfortable showing it to my mother, nor to my growing daughters. Maybe that's why, it has the most circulation.

I agree some good programmes we miss. But I feel its ok. "Kuch Pane Ke liye, Kuch Kona Padtha Hai"
Important events like world cup finals, election news,...  there is always internet.

Slowly my wife, and even my parents got used to the "Niceness" of being without TV.
And for children, we have many videos.

You can also experiment and see.

  1. Hi Shankar,

I am the big brother here. Actually we have not been having cable connection for about 5 years now. We don't need to be brain washed by the 'sensational news' that is actually junk. No wrong behaviors since we don't see the Soaps. If I tell my second son to study, he actually studies or if I ask him to do some work he does – because there is no cartoon channel to be deeply drowned in. My elder son is able to concentrate on his studies. I have reaffirmed enough times that we have not lost even one thing so far. But we have gained truck loads. And yes, we do have CDs for any of us to watch, if we need to.
With newspapers, we have stuck to The Hindu and Economic Times (for me). That works sufficiently.
Hm … tough to make people believe that we actually don't have a cable connection. Same reactions when I talk too – ya, good; may be we should try; you mean it? etc – but actually nobody has the guts to cut the cable connection. You are the only one I have seen so far who has actually cut cable. Good stuff.

    Regards,
    Gopal.
